Congresswoman Trahan Statement on Unanimous Alston Decision

Statement

Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03), a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and former Division-I volleyball player, released a statement following the Supreme Court's unanimous decision in National Collegiate Athletic Association v. Alston:

"Today's Supreme Court decision affirms what current and former college athletes like me have known for a long time -- amateurism hasn't existed for a long time and it certainly doesn't benefit the people who actually do the work in college athletics, not even close. Athletes' ability to be compensated for the use of their name, image, and likeness is a long overdue step, and this unanimous decision gets us closer to that reality. However, we cannot afford to celebrate this as a solution to all the problems within the NCAA system. It's not."

"It's imperative that Congress build on today's progress by codifying college athletes' right to monetize their NIL without interference from the NCAA. Then, we must go further by guaranteeing them the right to organize and collectively bargain for the compensation, safety, and playing conditions they're owed."
